Products & certification
Is Soil Food organic?
Yes. Soil Food is OMRI Listed for use in organic production.
Is Plant Food organic?
No. Plant Food is not OMRI Listed and not certified organic. If you need an organic-certified input, choose Soil Food.
Are the Refresh products organic or OMRI Listed?
Not yet. The Refresh products are built on an OMRI-Listed Soil Food base, but the finished Refresh products are not OMRI Listed today - their certification is in progress.
What is Soil Food made from?
Its nutrition is whole-animal-based, sourced from regional agricultural and animal-waste streams (for example, poultry in Kentucky). It also includes woody biomass, biochar, and a package of beneficial soil microbes. The exact source can vary by region.
What is the NPK of each product?
Soil Food is 4-2-1. Plant Food is 3-5-3. Refresh is a soil conditioner and does not carry an NPK rating.
What is the difference between Soil Food and Plant Food?
Soil Food is a dry amendment that builds the living soil over the season. Plant Food is a fast liquid feed that gives plants a quick, direct boost. They do different jobs and work well together.
Do I need both Soil Food and Plant Food?
No - either works on its own. Many gardeners use them together: Soil Food to build the soil, Plant Food for a fast feed during active growth.
What is Refresh, and how is it different from Soil Food?
Refresh is a family of consumer-friendly granular soil conditioners (Flower Pot, House Plant, Raised Bed, and Landscape) built on a Soil Food base and sized for a specific job. Use Refresh to renew soil you already have.
Can I plant directly in Refresh?
No. Refresh is a soil conditioner, not a stand-alone growing medium - work it into your existing soil rather than planting into it straight.
Using the products
How much Soil Food do I need?
For in-ground beds, use about 1 lb per 50 sq ft, worked in before planting. For an exact amount for your space, use the product calculator.
Can I use Soil Food in pots and containers?
Yes. Mix about 7 tablespoons per gallon of soil (roughly 2 to 3% by volume), or top-dress 1 to 4 tablespoons per sq ft around the base of the plant.
How do I apply Plant Food?
Mix 1/2 oz per gallon of water and apply as a foliar spray on the leaves, or as a root drench at the base, about once a week during active growth.
Will Soil Food burn my plants?
Soil Food's nitrogen is mostly slow-release, so at the recommended rates it feeds gently and is not prone to the burning you can get from a fast synthetic fertilizer. Always follow the rates on the label.
Can I use Soil Food with compost?
Yes. Soil Food can also be used as a compost starter.
Is it safe to use around pets and children?
Follow the label directions and normal garden-product precautions: store it sealed and out of reach, and wash your hands after handling. See the product label for full safety information.
What is the shelf life?
Soil Food lasts for years as long as it is kept dry in a sealed container.
Is there a Certificate of Analysis?
Yes. A Certificate of Analysis is published for both Soil Food and Plant Food on organilock.com.
